Google Preferred Sources

Google introduced a major update to Preferred Sources on Aug. 20, 2026, giving publishers another way to regain website traffic as AI-generated answers reduce traditional search clicks. The new feature allows publishers to add an interactive button to their websites, letting readers select them as trusted sources with one click. Since Google launched Preferred Sources in May 2026, users have selected more than 600,000 unique sources, up from about 345,000 a few months earlier. Google also reports that users are twice as likely to click a source they have marked as preferred. For businesses and publishers competing for visibility in an AI-driven search environment, Preferred Sources offers a valuable tool to strengthen audience connections and increase direct website traffic.

Greater Visibility

Google launched Preferred Sources in May 2026 to let users personalize search results by selecting publications they trust. Initially, users managed their choices through Google Search. They could search a news topic, select the Preferred Sources icon in Top Stories and choose their favorite publishers. Google would then feature more content from those sources in relevant results. Google later expanded the feature beyond Top Stories to AI Mode and AI Overviews. As a result, preferred publishers can gain greater visibility in both traditional search results and Google’s AI-generated responses and citations.

AI Search Reduces Publisher Traffic

AI-powered search increasingly answers questions directly in search results, reducing clicks to publisher websites. Google introduced Preferred Sources to help publishers counter that shift and strengthen direct connections with readers. The tool also addresses a web increasingly filled with AI-generated content, where clear trust signals carry greater value. Preferred Sources lets readers identify publications they trust, giving publishers more control over their visibility. At the same time, these selections provide Google with direct signals about which sources users value.

Preferred Sources Boost Trusted Publishers

Readers can select a website as a Preferred Source directly from the publisher’s site. Google then uses that choice to personalize future search experiences and give relevant content from that publisher greater visibility. Preferred sources can appear more prominently in Top Stories, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Discover and Google News. This can increase a publisher’s chances of earning citations, links and referral traffic from Google. Readers remain in control and can add or remove preferred sources at any time.

Add as Google Preferred Source

Add and Promote the Preferred Sources Button

Publishers and business owners can add Google’s Preferred Sources button by using the official embed code from Google Search Central. Place the button where visitors can easily find it, such as near the homepage header, within navigation or at the end of popular articles. Add a simple call to action, such as “Add us as a preferred source on Google,” so readers understand its purpose. After installation, test the button to confirm it works properly and returns visitors to the page they were viewing. Promote the feature through newsletters, social media and website messaging. Then monitor Google Search Console to track changes in search, Discover and other traffic.

Consider Benefits and Limitations

Preferred Sources offers publishers a simple way to strengthen visibility with readers who already value their content. Google reports that users are twice as likely to click a source they have marked as preferred. The feature can also influence visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode, making it increasingly relevant as AI reshapes search. Installation requires little effort, but publishers should keep expectations realistic. Preferred Sources does not guarantee higher rankings or reverse declining referral traffic. It also depends on readers actively selecting a website. For that reason, publishers should treat the button as another search visibility tool rather than a complete solution to AI-driven traffic changes.
